🔗 Polkadot Parachains: Shared Security

Learn how specialized chains connect to the Relay Chain

What is a Polkadot Parachain?

Polkadot parachains are specialized blockchains that run in parallel, sharing security from the Polkadot Relay Chain. Unlike traditional blockchains that must bootstrap their own validator sets and security, parachains "rent" security from Polkadot's shared validator pool of 297 validators.

🎯 Core Concept: Shared Security

Instead of competing for validators, parachains share Polkadot's validator set. This means a new parachain instantly inherits the economic security of billions of dollars in staked DOT, without needing to convince validators to secure their chain individually.

The Parachain Model

Relay Chain (Layer 0)

  • Provides shared security to all parachains
  • Coordinates consensus across parachains
  • Validates parachain blocks (not transactions)
  • Enables cross-chain communication (XCM)

Parachains (Layer 1)

  • Independent blockchains with custom logic
  • Process transactions in parallel
  • Lease security from Relay Chain
  • Can communicate with other parachains

Explore Live Parachains

Polkadot currently supports 100 parachain slots. Each parachain specializes in different use cases, from DeFi to gaming to smart contracts. Select a parachain below to explore its unique features:

Why Parachains Matter

🔒

Shared Security

Instant access to Polkadot's $5B+ staked security. No need to bootstrap validators.

Parallel Processing

100 parachains process transactions simultaneously, scaling horizontally.

🌉

Native Interoperability

XCM protocol enables trustless cross-chain asset and message transfers.
