Science Based Targets: Aligning Business with Climate Science

Understanding how companies set credible, ambitious climate goals aligned with global temperature limits

What are Science Based Targets?

Science Based Targets (SBTs) are corporate climate goals that are grounded in climate science and aligned with the global effort to limit warming to well below 2°C, preferably 1.5°C. These targets ensure that company actions contribute fairly to the collective goal of keeping global temperature rise in check.

Unlike traditional corporate sustainability goals, SBTs are validated by independent experts to ensure they are ambitious enough to make a real difference. They provide a clear pathway for companies to align their operations, supply chains, and growth strategies with what science tells us is necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

The SBTi Initiative

Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi): A collaboration between CDP, UN Global Compact, WRI, and WWF • Global Standard: Used by 3,000+ companies representing $20+ trillion in market cap • Validation Process: Independent assessment ensures targets are scientifically credible

The Science Behind the Targets

IPCC Assessment: Clear scientific consensus that limiting warming to 1.5°C requires net-zero CO₂ by 2050
Carbon Budget: Only ~300 Gt CO₂ can be emitted globally to stay within 1.5°C with 50% probability
